APNIC Announces its IPv4 Address Pool Reaches Final /8

APNIC announced that as of Friday, 15 April 2011, its IPv4 address pool reached the Final /8 IPv4 address block, bringing the Asia Pacific region to the last Stage of IPv4 exhaustion. This is a very important milestone on the IPv4 exhaustion process at a global level. The NRO urges Internet community members to deploy IPv6 within their organizations. Deploying IPv6 is now a requirement to ensure continued growth and development of the Internet. APNIC’s objective during this stage will be to provide IPv4 address space for new entrants to the market and for those deploying IPv6, under the final /8 policy. For more information on this policy, please refer to: http://www.apnic.net/criteria The other four Regional Internet Registries (AfriNIC, ARIN, LACNIC and the RIPE NCC) will continue to allocate IPv4 address space to their members in accordance with their community-based regional policies until their pools of available IPv4 addresses are depleted. All RIRs will continue to allocate IPv6 addresses as they have since 1999. NRO Comments on ITU IPv6 Group Liaison Statements

NRO Submits Response to ITU IPv6 Group on Country Internet Registry (CIR) Model

At the second ITU IPv6 Group meeting, held in September 2010, it was decided to send a number of Liaison Statements to organizations with expertise or an interest in the issues under discussion at the IPv6 Group. Liaison Statement 5 included a specific request for responses from the IETF, IAB, ICANN, ACSIS, and the NRO. The outgoing Liaison Statements can be viewed at: http://www.itu.int/en/ITU-T/others/ipv6/Pages/default.aspx On February 28, 2011, the four RIRs that are ITU sector members submitted a response on behalf of the NRO to Liaison Statement 5 - Country Internet Registry (CIR) model, which asked organizations to assess the impact of the NAv6 paper, 'Concerns on Ipv4 Address Policy with regard to Ipv6 Deployment'. In this submission to the ITU, the NRO explains the current function and ongoing success of RIR model, and provides its position on the proposed CIR model. NRO statement on RPKI

Dear Colleagues, Over several years, a set of mechanisms has been under development for digital certification of Internet number resources, through a so- called Resource Public Key Infrastructure, or "RPKI". Like other PKIs, the RPKI requires one or more root authorities, to act as so-called "trust anchors" for one or more certification hierarchies. The RPKI architecture has been designed to allow a number of trust anchor configurations involving: either a single trust anchor located at the root of a single certification hierarchy; a set of independent trust anchors to be located at the roots of several independent hierarchies; or a hybrid of these. The alternative models may have advantages and disadvantages in various dimensions including: operational efficiency; alignment with resource allocation hierarchies; centralisation vs distribution of functions; recognised global or regional authority; and, operational capacity of the respective host organisations. The Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) believe that the optimal eventual RPKI configuration involves a single authoritative trust anchor. That configuration may not be achievable in the short-term and the details and timelines for its implementation will depend among other things on discussions within the RIRs' communities and dialogues with others including the Internet Architecture Board (IAB) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). In the meantime, the RIRs have agreed to undertake pragmatic implementations of RPKI services based on interim trust anchor models, such as, self- signed trust anchors. All such implementations will comply with the overall RPKI architecture. The implementations will also have the ability to evolve into a single trust anchor model and provide robust and fully operational (and inter- operational) services for those who wish to use them. The objective is for all RIRs to be ready to start issuing certificates by no later than 01 January 2011. The RIRs will continue working with and receiving feedback from their respective communities and industry partners to ensure effective ongoing evolution of the RPKI system. Regards, Adiel A.
