NRO Comments to NTIA on ICANN

The NRO has submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which sought input on the transition of the technical coordination and management of the Internet DNS to the private sector. The NRO endorses the current model for coordinating the Internet domain name and addressing system and believes this model supports the further growth and evolution of the Internet. The NRO believes that the Memorandum of Understanding between the Department of Commerce and ICANN should not be renewed; in other words, the transition should continue along its path to the eventual completion. NRO Represented in Internet Governance Forum Advisory Group

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan named Raúl Echeberría, Executive Director of LACNIC and Adiel Akplogan, CEO of AfriNIC, to serve on a 46-member Advisory Group. This Advisory Group will assist the Secretary General in convening the Internet Governance Forum, and is comprised of representatives from governments, the private sector and civil society. The Group will prepare the agenda and programme for the first meeting of the Internet Governance Forum, which is to be held in Athens from 30 October to 2 November, 2006. The selection of two members of the Number Resource Organization (NRO) Executive Council signifies the important contribution the NRO plays in the Internet community and also reflects the integral role of the Regional Internet Registry system in Internet operations. The ICANN Nominating Committee(NomCom)invites Statements of Interest from all members of the Internet community as it seeks candidates for the following positions: * Three members of the ICANN Board of Directors * One member of the Council of the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) * One member of the Council of the Country-Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) * Two members of the At Large Advisory Committee (ALAC) Statements of Interest can be submitted by e-mail to nomcom.submissions(a)icann.org and should be received by 16 July 2006, for full consideration. Following a public nomination period, the ASO Address Council (ASO AC) selected the final set of candidates to fill the ASO seat on the ICANN Board currently held by Mouhamet Diop, whose term expires in June 2006. The candidates are: Envir Fraser Uchenna Ibekwe Jordi Palet Martinez Dave Wodelet On May 3, 2006, the ASO AC will make its final selection to appoint one of these individuals to fill the ASO Board seat. To aid them in making their final selection, the ASO AC members solicit your comments and statements of support for these candidates. NRO Comment on IANA RFI

16 March 2006 On 21 February 2006, the US Department of Commerce published a Sources Sought Notice <http://www.fbo.gov/spg/DOC/OS/OAM/Reference-Number-DOCNTIARFI0001/SynopsisR .html>, exploring options for Contractor performance of the IANA functions. The Number Resource Organization (NRO) will not, at this time, take part in this activity, as we currently do not foresee bidding for the contract. It is the NRO's mission "to protect the unallocated Number Resource pool," and the NRO would be able to perform the numbering function currently performed by the IANA. However, consistent with earlier comments the NRO has made, engaging in this contract activity is not a current goal of the NRO. Established in October 2003, the Number Resource Organization undertakes joint activities of the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), including joint technical projects, liaison activities, and policy coordination. In compliance with the ASO MoU and ICANN bylaws the Address Council hereby calls for nominations to the ICANN Board to fill the ASO seat currently held by Mouhamet Diop, whose term expires in June of 2006. WSIS Reinforces the Regional Internet Registries

In a press conference today at the WSIS in Tunis, the Number Resource Organization(NRO) released a statement regarding the Tunis Commitment found at: http://www.itu.int/wsis/documents/doc_multi.asp?lang=en&id=2266|0 The Number Resource Organization (NRO) is satisfied with the result of the WSIS. It is a positive result that the role of governments inside the area of Internet governance has been clearly defined,and that there is a clear decision for governments not to become involved in the daily operational and technical matters of the Internet.This result,while recognising the importance of full involvement of all stakeholders, allows for the continued successful operation of the Internet and is a successful outcome for the Internet community as a whole.
