Thank you for pointing this out.  It concerns me as well.

I assume this is based on an interpretation of the IANA trademark license.  

What is this interpretation, and how is it is being communicated?, etc.  

What are the changes, exactly?  What effect will they have?  Will there be any technical effects whatsoever.

It's unfortunate that this information wasn't communicated to this group during the planning phase of this project.

My gut reaction is that this is potentially a misinterpretation or over-reaction to elements of the trademark license.  But I don't want to jump to conclusions without additional information.

I could understand if ICANN/PTI were changing the bare term “IANA” to more specific terms like “IANA operator”, “IANA functions”, “IANA services”, etc., but removing the term doesn’t seem useful to me.  Could somebody explain the reasoning behind this change?
